PersonalI am a happy and outgoing person, trusted by my employers and friends. Those who know me enjoy my good sense of humour and ability to communicate. Due to the nature of my past employment and work experience placements; I have developed a good ability to learn new skills, make new friends and to work hard both mentally and physically. I have a good working relationship with my colleagues and am able to work independently and efficiently. Academic QualificationsI received a class III BSc in Computer Science from the University of East Anglia in the summer of 2004 having written my thesis on ‘The Translation of Motion Capture Files between Disproportionate Human Avatars’. The modules I studied for the degree include Computer Networks, Algorithmics, Computer Vision, Advanced Architectures, Database Systems, Internet Technologies, Data Structures and Algorithms, Software Development Techniques and Operating Systems, Kernels and Architecture. Although much of the software required for the course was written in Java; I have also gained, to a lesser extent, some experience in writing C/C++. Education
Work Experience1997-1998: Cleaner - Enterprize CleanI was employed by "Enterprize Clean" for approximately six months on a part time basis. My job included many cleaning, health and safety aspects as I was based at "Tescos" supermarket (Harford Bridges, Norwich), one of Enterprize's many clients. During this time, I was trained extensively in many aspects of cleaning the supermarket. Unfortunately, due to the early shifts and the distance that I had to commute, I found it increasingly difficult to arrange transport and decided to hand in my notice. When I left, I was considered to be a hard working and well respected member of the team. 1998-1999: Management Assistant - Jillian Stephen's Property Management (JSM), Norwich During this period I worked for JSM every Saturday from 8.30am until 1.00pm. I was responsible for unlocking and opening the Norwich office, dealing with current and prospective tenants/landlords, in person and on the phone, and producing an up to date property list which I would help to send to all of our prospective tenants. I consider this to have been a very responsible position as I was trusted entirely with keys and alarm details of hundreds of properties in the Norfolk area. Whilst working for JSM, I developed a good ability to deal with the public and improved my telephone and computer skills. I enjoyed working with my colleagues at JSM, and team work was encouraged and reinforced by the "out of hours" social events that we attended together. I left JSM due to the cancellation of the 'mailing list' system that I had initially been employed to operate. June 1999 - June 2000: Kitchen Porter - The Old Ram Coaching Inn, Tivetshall St Mary During my time at the Old Ram, I was expected to wash all of the dirty crockery and cutlery from the restaurant and all of the dirty pans, saucepans, plates etc. that the chefs used to prepare the food. The shifts were usually 6/7p.m. - 12/1 a.m. and were very hard work as I had to thoroughly clean a large area of the kitchen once the chefs had left. This job encouraged good attention to detail as it was essential that the kitchen and everything in it were kept spotless and in a hygienic condition. This job was also very good for encouraging team work as the restaurant would simply cease to operate if we didn't work as a team. I left the Old Ram in order to move to Sheffield to start my degree and was considered a valuable member of the team at the time of my resignation. April 2001 – January 2003: Pizza/Salad/Grill/Pasta Chef - Caffé Uno, 2-3 Tombland, Norwich I began work at Caffé Uno as a kitchen porter and was quickly trained as a salad chef, then pizza/grill chef and finally a pasta chef. There were about seventy dishes on the menu during this period plus monthly specials which I was encouraged to give my input to. I gained a good knowledge of Italian cuisine and learnt all aspects of preparation, service and cleaning that take place in the kitchen. I was regularly in charge of the kitchen whilst the supervising chef was on a lunch break and have supervised shifts when necessary. Leaving Caffé Uno was not a decision that I made lightly as I had many friends there and gained a lot of respect. However, due to menu and budget changes, the company decided to start buying pre-prepared frozen foods and cut back on fresh produce. This decision saddened me and ultimately forced me to resign. February 2003 – September 2003: Head Chef - The Ugly Bug Inn, Colton, Norfolk I was initially offered the position of Second Chef when I was granted an interview at the Ugly Bug, I accepted and fulfilled this role for a few days. Soon after, the Head Chef, and partner in the business, had a disagreement with her CO-owner and left the business. This gave me the opportunity to start improving the menu, from standard bar food to a full 'a la carte' menu; with the approval of the remaining owner, a previously silent partner and cordon bleu chef. In the eight months that I spent at the Ugly Bug, I made many reforms in the kitchen including improvements in food quality, hygiene levels, waiting times and cost-of-sales. The manager and owner of the restaurant were very pleased with my performance and level of commitment during this time. My duties included the setting and costing of the menu, the design of daily specials, stock control and ordering, training new staff and ensuring a high level of hygiene in the kitchen. I have fond memories of my time at the Ugly Bug, but I chose to leave in order to spend more time on my degree. 2003 (Intermittent periods): Chef - Henry's Bar and Cafe, Haymarket, Norwich I assisted some former colleagues from Caffe Uno with some intermittent work at Henry's in 2003 as they were suffering staffing problems. July 2004 – September 2005: Chef De Partie - Castle Personnel, Castle Meadow, Norwich I worked as an agency chef during this period, traveling to a variety of kitchens in the Norfolk area; from care homes, to restaurants, tearooms and canteens. I found myself working alone; cooking for 17-40 people one day and in a team of 20 or more people; cooking for 500+ people the next. During this time, I took a 4 month career break in order to spend a season skiing in France in the period 1st December until April 1st. October 2005 – June 2006: Customer Service Representative - AXA Insurance UK PLC, Ipswich During this time, I worked in the Customer Service Personal Lines department at AXA; providing telephone quotations and policies for pet insurance on behalf of M&S Pet Care and Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Care. AXA, as a company, are renowned in the insurance industry and beyond for their excellent customer service training. I received three weeks of training on the Data Protection Act, Customer Service, Financial Services Authority regulations, insurance products, principles of Insurance and the use of the in-house software system, Voyager. This training was ongoing with monthly reviews of my progress and the introduction of new goals and targets for Customer Service levels. The interview for this position was a competency-based interview in which I was asked to give examples from my working life of; providing good customer service, working in teams, seeing things through to completion etc. Whilst at AXA, I sold many thousands of pounds-worth of policies and won several prizes including a DVD player and a case of Champagne for my sales performance. Unfortunately, due to increasing travel costs and congestion on my route to work (The A14), I resigned from AXA and my employment ceased on 2nd June. It was with regret that I chose to leave the good friends I had made at AXA but I look forward to taking the experience that I have gained to meet new challenges in my future career. July 2006 - Present: Harvest Assistant - Saaten Union UK Ltd, Cowlinge, Newmarket, Suffolk In my current employment, I am working for an agricultural seed trials company. I have been hired as a seasonal worker to assist with the harvesting of over ten thousand plots of wheat, rye, barley, oilseed rape and oats.
